Triliums, Thrifting, & My Obsession with Triplicates!

I have a passion for Triliums! One of the Very First plants to grace my gardens... Of course, I planted "three" deep red ones...

I have found some wonderful treasures in my "goodwill hunting"... The little vintage"Toto basket" is one of my FAVORITE FINDS! It was $1...The creamy white dishes peeking out are a set(4) of Italian Ironstone($1ea)... That very same day I got a stack of hand made napkins(do you see them scattered around the table)? The material looks like MAYBE "VERA"??? There were "3" for $1...

These Sweet little Twins are just "Darling"! How could I not invite them home with me! "Does ANYONE Recognize them"??? They are SO Beautifully Detailed!!! They were only $3 for the pair!!! MAYBE from the 40s??? HEY!!! that would make them older than "MOI"!!!

She is holding a canvas and paint brushes & He is holding roller skates... Can you tell by their expressions that they would rather be OFF "Doing their Own Thing"... and NOT standing around posing for my Tablescape??? I baited them here by promising to pack Our cute little picnic basket with tasty treats for an afternoon down by the lake...I also positioned a pear(Limoges France)  on top of the fountain, to tempt the talents of an aspiring young lady artist..."She does not look impressed"!!!

This cute little fountain is all vintage charm. The bottom is a a small pedestal of blown glass that would be Perfectly Proportioned for a large cupcake or muffin. The 2 sherbets on top ALSO have a matching third one...They are SO THIN and SO GORGEOUS...The consistency of fine crystal... I do not know the maker of ANY of these beautiful glasses...I would LOVE to know??? Hint Hint Hint

"Look at her thick gorgeous eyelashes"!!! Just like those "Vintage Head Vases" have...Is it possible it's the same manufacturer??? They are a very high quality...

Those demitasse cups are hand painted ADAMS Real English Ironstone, Este1657,Member of the Wedgwood Group...The color is a very pale turquoise with flowers painted inside AND out...I was able to get a set of 6, although the manufacturers mark on the bottoms are different... There were no saucers ... "BUT who cares"...They were only $3dollars for all six... Who could pass on these little charmers... NOT ME!!!
Oh Yes, that is a little Limoges Bee Box...

Their eyelashes EVEN Cast a Shadow on their cheeks...Isn't that Precious? LOVE THEM!!! They are also quite tall, measuring in at around 8inches(give or take a bow)...
"My TRILIUM from Spring 2011"...I hope Mother Nature has spared some of my gardens...Now that Spring has Sprung, time will tell!!! My TRILIUM is planted with my hostas, so they poke their pretty little smiling face up through the giant leave and display their "All their Triple Characteristics"!!! There are wonderful wild varieties BUT they are a delicacy to deer... SO... along with the HOSTAS I MUST REMEMBER to spray my deer repellent  on ALL my smorgasbord... SO... the critters will just stand back and admire the visual beauty along with me!!! "If I forget to spray I just hope I have my camera HANDY to CAPTURE the Kodak Moment to share with you"...

Feast your eyes on this divine "Majolica Jug"!!! Are you ready??? It was "$1"!!! That's ALL!!! I grabbed it, paid, and RAN to the car "Quick as a bunny" before they realized that I "Practically Stole It"!!! I drove STRAIGHT HOME like there was a posse on my tail!!! I gave my new treasure a bubble bath and placed it ever so gently on a VERY HIGH shelf in my kitchen...If there was a knock on the door, MY STORY was "I hadn't been out shopping ALL WEEK"!!!
I don't have a CLUE who the maker is??? NOR do I care!!! I LOVE,LOVE,LOVE IT!!! It has a chip in the back of the rim(probably why they marked it SO CHEAP), BUT I've camouflaged it with a  "BOVANO of Cheshire Connecticut", hand made enameled copper, "Trilium"!!! Bovano is the authorized US distributor for Soyer Enamels. Soyer Enamels are manufactured at the Cristallerie de Saint Paul in Limoge France where they have been produced for more than 100 years. I am SO LUCKY to live local to The old foundry building that still houses the enameling studio and Bovano Home Gallery. To see more BOVANO, travel HERE!

If you would like to virtually see how Bovano makes the works of art...
Here is a "SNEAK PEEK INSIDE How BOVANO is made"!!!

"Searching for Carrickmacross Lace"...

"Happy St Patrick's Day to You All"!!! I am RE-POSTING due to my SHY return to blogging... Hmmm, the table is SET for the season, "I MUST GET THAT CAMERA TRIPOD SET" !!!
These little Irish Lasses were born here in Connecticut when Sandi McAslan lived here...

I only bought ONE little doily at the Convent in Northern Ireland where this beautiful lace is made...I found all the other pieces of my Carrickmacross Lace here in my own little town of only 1000 residences... Each year I would find a new treasure at our little church bazaar... We do have the late Frank McCourt and his lovely wife and Frank Delaney as locals... Hmmm, I wonder if they may have donated them... I had been looking for decades for this fine lace, "What LUCK of the Irish to have found it next door"...
Carrickmacross lace has a history that reaches back into the early 1800’s when the town of Carrickmacross needed employment for its citizens, especially young women. On a honeymoon trip to Italy, Mrs. Grey Porter, from Carrickmacross and wife of the rector of a neighboring parish, was inspired by Italian lace designs. She and her hand maid learned the appliqué technique by copying the Italian work, and in 1820, established a lace making school which attracted many students. The school grew in popularity, as did the fine quality Carrickmacross lace.
Economic hardship in the 40’s and 50’s saw a decline in the demand for lace, yet production continued, though much less so, until the late 80’s. Realizing the fine quality of workmanship that would be wasted if the lace making ceased, the nuns of the St. Louis Convent established a lace making school both to employ young women in the community and to give shelter to those in need.
The great era of Irish lace ended with World War 1 in 1914, but outworkers at St. Louis Convent continued their tradition of lace making and today, Carrickmacross lace is used by designers all over the world. Queen Elizabeth’s Coronation gown, as well as Princess Diana’s wedding gown were both designed with intricate insets of Carrickmacross lace.
This showroom features several award-winning pieces, including a stunning cascade of daylilies made entirely of lace. On display, as well, are antique lace collars, christening gowns, tablecloths, napkins, and placemats. For purchase are many fine, locally handmade pieces of lacework, including placemats (€200), table runners (€700), christening gowns (€750), bonnets (€ 85), wedding veils (€400), and dainty doilies (€35-60).

The Belleek "thistle cup" on the left is one of many that followed me home from Northern Ireland when we visited the Belleek Factory...
This is the second smallest doily they make at the St. Louis Convent in Northern Ireland... "This is the piece I brought home from my trip"... Hubby told me that the reason the road narrowed into a path was to prevent hubbies from "Turning Around and heading to the Pub"... It took us a whole day to find our destination... I had a MAP and as I navigated Hubby kept mumbling something about spending a day of his vacation looking for "A CONVENT", and I would mumble my reply of "But they are the ONLY place that makes handmade Carrickmacross Lace"!!! "We were in our 20s then and OK I can imagine it would NOT have been something he would talk about EVER AGAIN"... It was our little secret and I watched eagerly out the window as I DREAMED of the HUGE Christmas tablecloth that soon would be mine... There was a constant supply of sheep that would get in our path and once again, Hubby would mumble something about Wool to keep us warm as we Slept on the side of the path overnight looking for "A CONVENT"... We DID finally arrive and after a considerable amount of admiration for the "Masterpieces created here in this place"... I DID NOT get my Christmas Tablecloth, there would be NO envy in the ladies that would see my TJmaxx Christmas tablecloth... I had resorted down to the SMALLEST of doilies they made, it was all I could afford... Hubby waited patiently watching my every expression and as I lay my purchase in the Nuns hand, he "Upgraded me to the SECOND smallest doily they made", he said, "Here you really should get one with shamrocks"(It pays to be married to Mr. Right)  Oh I LOVE him to pieces, that was thirty something years ago and just like my little Carrickmacross Doily HE is One of My Favorite Things!!! NO... HE IS "My Favorite Thing"!!!

"HAPPY St Patrick's Day"!!!

Saying "GOODBYE" to winter 2012

Saying "Goodbye to Winter 2012" has to take us back to where our winter started at the End of October 2011...I want to forget all things WHITE frozen SLUSHY and cold from 2011...It was a RECORD year here for that 4letter word SNOW!!! As you can see in THIS photo I will be doing LOTS of crying as I clean up this spring...This is the ONLY destruction for WINTER and it goes back to Hurricane Irene followed by Nor'easter Snowstorm Alfred!

Take a look at what is LEFT of my beautiful Hydrangea fence! You will see the BEFORE picture in the NEXT photo...

Even though the HYDRANGEA FENCE was not HUGE it was getting there and every year it was more gorgeous than the previous year!!! WELL, the LEFT side is TOTALLY GONE now...sniff,sniff,sniff...

There are Lots and Lots of downed trees AND these were HUGE ones. SO Tall I needed binoculars to see their leaves. Now we have Lots and Lots of firewood! Do you see the ROOTS of the trees???

You cannot see it in this picture...BUT... this is "TWO" large trees and they are crushing a whole field of native Mountain Laurel bushes(hundreds of years old, and all gone)...

Here's a sight we don't see often...Hostas in the snow...

I have NEVER seen the destruction this October snow brought... SNOW & LEAVES equal MAJOR disaster...We were without power for over a week... I did not take pictures of all that I lost... It was too heartbreaking "BUT" I must NOT complain...Mother Nature gave us a super mild winter..."BUT" my heart is NOW with all those in our heartland and around the world that are suffering "All Kinds of Disasters" and not a moment goes by that I don't PRAY FOR THEM! AND as I clean up this spring "I will smile and count my Blessing"... After all I have all of you WONDERFUL Blogging Friends!

Hard to believe this was October!!!

I ran around after the snow started trying to ROUND UP my garden labels...HAHAHA!!! Too Funny!!!  Thank you for stopping by and "I've MISSED YOU ALL so much"...BIG Squishy Hugs!!!

Wednesday, March 7, 2012

Hello all you wonderful people "In my Land of Blog"! I am Really Missing You ALL! and although I have Spring Fever BAD, my Blogging Fever is overwhelming... I have tried SO MANY times to get into my blog and "It rejected me saying I wasn't who I said I was"!!! AND a few times that I DID get in and visited a few of you, My Comments were "Rejected with a stern WHO THE HECK ARE YOU"??? "UGH"!!! I think I'll go DIG IN THE DIRT! and that is a WHOLE other issue Seeing AS we had an October Snow storm that practically WHIPPED my gardens off the face of the earth! BUT I'm counting my blessings and PRAYING SO HARD for all of the poor souls who have lost everything from Mother Natures Wrath...
Love you all and Big Squishy Hugs to you!!!

Maira Kalman's Library Art

This is a beautiful video of a subject I am "Very Passionate" about! My love of books has been with me since childhood... We need to keep the "Creativity" Alive in our youth, they are our future and need to express themselves... In a simple book the world and beyond are "Endless"...I know we live in a world of KINDLES and electronic reading BUT there is something about stepping into a library that is "MAGICAL"! It lets your creative side soar into times and spaces you may never actually visit! Some of those times and spaces do not exist outside of the books covers and our personal adventure inside it...  I don't know about you, BUT when I step through the door of my local libraries I feel a presence there...I hear whispering in the air... A Library is Infinity at our fingertips! Let's keep them alive..."Please support your local libraries"!!! I feel the same about bookstores... I want authors to ALWAYS know I am their "Biggest Fan"... I am HERE and "I'm Reading YOUR Book"!!!

Bargains, Tea, and a Bear

We are having lots of rain this week so instead of working in my gardens I thought I'd sit here and admire them through my window...
"Do you see Summer out there"???
"HAPPY 4th of JULY Everyone"!!!
Of course with the scent of honey from the tea "A good Ol' bear" dropped in and took a seat...

I thought I would share a few of my bargains from my latest treasure hunt with you... I always bring my goodies home, polish them up and initiate them into my cottage...
Do you recognize my "Gnarly Basket" inverted to make a table???  It works perfectly and fits the mood... You can see it in my May Post "Captivated by Kipling",
where it served as a basket... I'm not quite sure "WHAT" it was intended to be, but I have a theory... It was made by the forest friends and used as a playpen for their little ones! Hey, I told you it was My Theory AND this is My Blog, so I'm sticking to it!
First let me introduce my MUG, or at least I thought it was a mug...I was very excited with it's cute little cottage look and price of $1... So... I trotted off to the register to claim it and take it home!
After giving it a bubble bath, I made myself a cup of coffee, made myself comfy and then proceeded to look my little treasure find up...  MAYBE I could find another mug or plate "OR" MAYBE a teapot, to keep it company... Oh Yes!!! Well as I typed in "Price Kensington Cottageware" made in England, UP POPPED my mug...WHICH wasn't a mug at all!!! It was part of a cup & saucer "SET"... AND the worst part "WAS" that I had seen the saucer at GW(NO they were NOT together in the store) and passed it by... """OH NO"""!!! What was I to do!!!  Well, after a VERY SLEEPLESS night, I headed BACK to GW to claim my saucer!!! and as you can see they are now very happily reunited... "Do you know my coffee tastes better in this cup NOW that it's had it's reunion with it's saucer"??? I can see them smiling at each other as I do my little happy dance!!!
This Antique Figural Teapot is "Bennington Pottery's Rebecca at the Well"..."It was made between 1850 & 1870" and followed me home from another thrift shop for $1 the VERY NEXT day! I had cleaned it up and set it in my front window... While admiring it "I had an idea"!!! The "Cottageware Cup & Saucer" would make a WONDERFUL set with this pot...Just look at Rebecca at the well! Doesn't she look like she lives in that sweet little cottage on the cup??? "PERFECT"!   The figural pot has the same scene on both sides...
I want to "Thank" Sherry @Back2Vintage For helping me  identify my teapot! She is always so helpful! and if you haven't visited her blog yet... "Please Do"... You will be in for a Big Treat!!! "While you're there, give her a HUG from me"!!!
It seems like yesterday I was showing you how HIGH the snow was piled outside this window... and NOW it's replaced with the most beautiful display of magenta pink...
This is "Spirea Neon Flash"! It's one of my favorites for it's continual performance and color all season long... It was damaged tremendously from the heft of our winter snows...I had to cut it back almost to the ground...YET... it's rewards are great...It will bloom and bloom again, giving me a display of magenta pink until the late fall gives way to winter once more... Oh Yes, it IS one of my favorites!
Now lets talk about "Tea"! I am a coffee-aholic, BUT I find tea a dessert alternative and DO enjoy exploring the fine culture of "Drinking AND Collecting Teas"... I really love "TEAVANA"... The photos here are a few of my favorite Maté teas... Have you ever tasted their "Magic", visited their stores or their website???
Maté is a wild shrub from Argentina that makes a delicious, flavorful tea. Maté tea contains a stimulant similar to caffeine, although without the jitteriness or addictive tendencies.

Blueberry Kona Pop Tea Blend

Deliciously fruity and refreshing! This blend of Their Blueberry Bliss Rooibos tea and Pineapple Kona Pop herbal tea makes a wonderful iced tea treat when paired with their German Rock Sugar. It is a caffeine-free delight that is great for the whole family.

My Morning Mate Tea...

The Secret Garden

Mother Nature always has a plan...

She never forgets to stop and smell the flowers...
She is forever spreading her kindness...
Last year I neglected my gardens due to family illness... It was also the hottest summer on record followed my record snowfall...
But... Mother Nature had a plan...
A profusion of flowers that is destined to be a masterpiece year...
She has left nothing untouched...
All of God's Creatures seem at home here... This little guy is a tree frog and he "SINGS all night under my bedroom window"...WOW, what a set of lungs he has!
Flowers are a soothing part of life...Whether they be planted or wild... You can always count on them to make you happy... I hope a peek into a few of my gardens have made you smile today...

MAGNOLIAS

One of my Dearest Friends sent me this in the mail...Maybe some of you have already read it BUT I am sure that all of you should read it "Just Because"!!! It will make you cry but I know all my friends here are the same people that would find the joy of this story!!!
I also think posting it on Sunday is Perfect!!!
REMEMBER this is not my story BUT because I agree that we all need each other I am passing it on to you...

I spent the week before my daughter's June wedding running last-minute trips to the caterer, florist, tuxedo shop, and the church about forty miles away. As happy as I was that Patsy was marrying a good Christian young man, I felt laden with responsibilities as I watched my budget dwindle .. . So many details, so many bills, and so little time. My son Jack was away at college, but he said he would be there to walk his younger sister down the aisle, taking the place of his dad who had died a few years before. He teased Patsy, saying he'd wanted to give her away since she was about three years old! To save money, I gathered blossoms from several friends who had large magnolia trees. Their luscious, creamy-white blooms and slick green leaves would make beautiful arrangements against the rich dark wood inside the church.
After the rehearsal dinner the night before the wedding, we banked the podium area and choir loft with magnolias. As we left just before midnight, I felt tired but satisfied this would be the best wedding any bride had ever had! The music, the ceremony, the reception - and especially the flowers - would be remembered for years.

The big day arrived - the busiest day of my life - and while her bridesmaids helped Patsy to dress, her fiancé Tim walked with me to the sanctuary to do a final check. When we opened the door and felt a rush of hot air, I almost fainted; and then I saw them - all the beautiful white flowers were black. Funeral black. An electrical storm during the night had knocked out the air conditioning system, and on that hot summer day, the flowers had wilted and died.

I panicked, knowing I didn't have time to drive back to our hometown, gather more flowers, and return in time for the wedding.

Tim turned to me. 'Edna, can you get more flowers? I'll throw away these dead ones and put fresh flowers in these arrangements.'

I mumbled, 'Sure,' as he be-bopped down the hall to put on his cuff links.

Alone in the large sanctuary, I looked up at the dark wooden beams in the arched ceiling. 'Lord,' I prayed, 'please help me. I don't know anyone in this town. Help me find someone willing to give me flowers - in a hurry!' I scurried out praying for four things: the blessing of white magnolias, courage to find them in an unfamiliar yard, safety from any dog that may bite my leg, and a nice person who would not get out a shotgun when I asked to cut his tree to shreds.

As I left the church, I saw magnolia trees in the distance. I approached a house...No dog in sight.. Knocked on the door and an older man answered. So far so good. No shotgun. When I stated my plea the man beamed, 'I'd be happy to!'

He climbed a stepladder and cut large boughs and handed them down to me. Minutes later, as I lifted the last armload into my car trunk, I said, 'Sir, you've made the mother of a bride happy today.' No, Ma'am,' he said. 'You don't understand what's happening here.' 'What?' I asked. 'You see, my wife of sixty-seven years died on Monday. On Tuesday I received friends at the funeral home, and on Wednesday . . . He paused. I saw tears welling up in his eyes. 'On Wednesday I buried her.' He looked away. 'On Thursday most of my out-of-town relatives went back home, and on Friday - yesterday - my children left.' I nodded.

'This morning,' he continued, 'I was sitting in my den crying out loud. I miss her so much. For the last sixteen years, as her health got worse, she needed me. But now nobody needs me. This morning I cried, 'Who needs an eighty-six-year-old wore-out man? Nobody!' I began to cry louder. 'Nobody needs me!' About that time, you knocked, and said, 'Sir, I need you.' I stood with my mouth open. He asked, 'Are you an angel? The way the light shone around your head into my dark living room...' I assured him I was no angel.

He smiled. 'Do you know what I was thinking when I handed you those magnolias?' 'No.' 'I decided I'm needed. My flowers are needed. Why, I might have a flower ministry! I could give them to everyone! Some caskets at the funeral home have no flowers. People need flowers at times like that and I have lots of them. They're all over the backyard! I can give them to hospitals, churches - all sorts of places. You know what I'm going to do? I'm going to serve the Lord until the day He calls me home!'

I drove back to the church, filled with wonder. On Patsy's wedding day, if anyone had asked me to encourage someone who was hurting, I would have said, 'Forget it! It's my only daughter's wedding, for goodness' sake! There is no way I can minister to anyone today.' But God found a way. Through dead flowers. 'Life is not the way it's supposed to be. It's the way it is. The way you cope with it is what makes the difference.'
