Pipefuls

There is no mistaking a real book when one meets it. It is like falling in love, and like that colossal adventure it is an experience of great social import. Even as the tranced swain, the book lover yearns to tell others of his bliss. He writes letters about it, adds it to the postscript of all manner of communications, intrudes it into telephone messages, and insists on his friends writing down the title of the find. Like the simple-hearted betrothed, once certain of his conquest, "I want you to love her, too!" It is a jealous passion also. He feels a little indignant if he finds that any one else has discovered the book, too. -Christopher Morley,"On Visiting Bookshops,"Pipefuls, (1920)
"Dad & Basil must have finished their book, I can see them on the library ladder looking for another adventure"...
Basil Rathbone as Sherlock Holmes was my Dad in Laws FAVORITE... He would always mumble that they "just don't make them like him anymore"... You can imagine his excitement when Hubby & I during a trip to Dublin had this Sherlock pipe made JUST for HIM at Peterson Pipes. I got just as much excitement every time I saw him sitting back in his chair with it cupped in his hand. He wasn't smoking very much any more BUT, "It WAS a genuine Dublin Peterson Sherlock Holmes Pipe made just for him", and he would sit silently, smiling a lot... The book PIPEFULS is a "MUST READ" for everyone... I'm going to see if it's LEGAL for me to post pages from it... It has chapters that you will definitely be discussing over dinner, It's witty and cute and ageless, even though it was published in 1920... Originally I had only bought it because of the name and the picture on the cover, for my Dad in Laws Visits BUT it always ends up a favorite from my library...

My grandfather smoked a pipe. I can still smell it if I think about it. You really take lovely photos.

This is so cool. It's so well done. The hankerchief's design almost looks like swirls of smoke.

What great photos -- there is nothing like the smell of a pipe and what a wonderful pipe that is!

Donna, Is that your library ladder? I love it! I'm happy that your dad in law was so happy with your gift! Did you just love Dublin too? The people are so friendly. I know everyone says that but you don't know how friendly until you experience it yourself! Linda

Yes Linda the ladder is on a brass rod that runs the full length and is attached to the bookcases. There is one on each side of my library... These ladders are SO Comfy to stand on...

Your books are truly amazing! And how sweet of you to get that pipe for your father-in-law. I'll bet it's one of his favorite things. Blessings... Polly (French Cupboard)

Donna, This vignette in the library is amazing. I feel as if I am in a room straight out of a 40's era black and white movie. You've set such a comfortable, masculine setting- so fitting for the "perfect" gentleman.

I just had to come back and let you know ~ I found (and ordered ;-) a copy of Pipefuls!! My house was built in 1922 so I naturally gravitate to anything from that ear. I can't wait to read it!!

I saw your comment over at Susan's BNotP. Banana peel? Really? I'm going to give that a try. At the moment the peel goes on the compost heap.
You have some beautiful photos on your blog. I've enjoyed looking at them, and I loved the film clip of choosing colours for the home. Brilliant! xx
